This morning I worked again with Jacob using flash cards with short vowel sounds. Since the last time we’ve worked on this (two week ago) he has been practicing them daily on his own. Today, in addition to the consonant+vowel cards we worked on syllables, both nonsense and words. We worked up to 4-6 letter words, sound by sound. An example of this is starting with ‘um’ then ‘rum’ then ‘trum’ and ending with ‘strum’. This exercise clearly improved Jacob’s sense of blending sounds and forming syllables. He was using skills of forming words he has been taught, such as the FLOSS rule and knowledge of closed vowels. Jacob got 18 of the 25 syllables correct. This is 72%, and improvement from what he was scored before.
