Today was my third time in Mrs. Davis’ classroom spending time with Jacob. During this class time I got to spend a lot of time with him working on the website Lexia. This website goes through different activities working with vocabulary, sight words, phonics, spelling and so on. He was focusing on double vowel sounds such as ‘oi’, ‘oo’, and ‘oy’. Jacob had trouble listening to the computer and then selecting the correct sound, but if I repeated the word, and wrote the rest of the word, leaving blanks where the vowels went, he could complete it. During the time on the internet I realized that Jacob gets very frustrated very easily. If he didn’t understand the directions he would claim to never have been taught that content. I learned that Jacob is great with sight words, which shows me that he worked a lot off of memorization when he was in public school last year, and really struggles with multiple syllable words and blended letter sounds. With a  lot of encouragement Jacob got through all of the exercises performing fairly well. We also worked on handwriting today, showing me that he is perfectly capable of writing neatly when he puts forth the effort. Currently the biggest struggle with Jacob is getting him excited about what we are doing and having him care about how well he does, it is evident that he doesn’t think he can do well in school.
